How did teamLab Planets begin?

It grew out of “DMM.Planets Art by teamLab,” held in Odaiba in 2016. That show ran only 47 days, and some visitors waited more than six hours. Building on it, “teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com” opened in Toyosu on July 7, 2018, as a limited run until autumn 2020.

Because of its popularity, the run kept being extended: to the end of 2022, then the end of 2023, and finally to the end of 2027. On July 2, 2021, for the third anniversary, the Garden Area with its orchid garden and moss garden opened.

On January 22, 2025, the museum grew to about 1.5 times its size, adding more than 20 works including the Athletics Forest, the Catching and Collecting Forest and Learn! Future Park. It is run by PLANETS Co., Ltd., founded in 2017; the works are by teamLab, an art collective active since 2001.

The orchids float in the air, without soil

“Floating Flower Garden: Flowers and I are of the Same Root, the Garden and I are One” is a space filled with more than 13,000 living orchids. They are grown without soil, their roots hanging in the air.

When you approach, only the orchids around you slowly rise to open a path; once you pass, the ones behind you come down again. The walls and floor are mirrors, so flowers surround you 360 degrees. When you meet other visitors, your open spaces join.

More visitors than the Van Gogh Museum

From April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024 it had 2,504,264 visitors, and in 2024 Guinness World Records recognized it as the most visited museum dedicated to a single art group.

For comparison, in 2023 the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam had 1,686,766 visitors and the Picasso Museum in Barcelona 1,047,094. It was teamLab's second Guinness record, after teamLab Borderless in Odaiba (2,198,284 visitors) in 2019.

About 70 percent come from abroad

Between March and August 2023, about one million visitors came from 182 countries and regions outside Japan, about 70 percent of the total.

Even in its first year, more than 1.25 million people came from 106 countries and regions. It has become a destination in its own right for travelers to Tokyo.

People stay longer since the expansion

In the month after the January 2025 expansion, ticket purchases were about 130 percent of the same period a year earlier.

In the museum's survey, visitors staying two hours or more rose from about 12 percent before the expansion to about 60 percent, and those staying three hours or more from about 1 percent to about 20 percent. It is no longer a one-hour museum.

The flowers change with the seasons

In “Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers” and the koi work, flowers of the whole year shift with the seasons. They are born, bud, bloom, scatter and wither in an endless cycle.

From March 1 to April 30, 2025, both works turned to cherry blossoms: the space filled with sakura, and the koi scattered into cherry petals when they hit people.

Other ways to get around

The nearest station is Shin-Toyosu on the Yurikamome (3-minute walk from Exit 1A). Because Toei Bus 都05-2 is very crowded, the venue recommends other transport. You can also book a taxi by app: GO works in English with foreign phone numbers and cards, Uber books licensed taxis in Tokyo, and since early 2026 visitors can call S.RIDE taxis through DiDi in the 23 wards and nearby.

Our suggested route

  1. Leave your shoes in a locker At the entrance, put your shoes and socks in a locker and go barefoot. Roll your trousers above the knee or change into the free shorts (10 min).
  2. Water Area Seven works: wade knee-deep through the koi, see the points of light in “The Infinite Crystal Universe,” lie back under the universe of flowers (40 min).
  3. Garden Area The Floating Flower Garden with its orchids and the outdoor moss garden (20 min). The moss garden is best after dark.
  4. Athletics Forest and Future Park About 17 works where you bounce, climb, slide and watch creatures you drew come to life (40–60 min).
  5. Outdoor area and shops Eat vegan ramen inside an artwork, then visit the Living Art Store and the Sketch Factory (30 min).

teamLab Planets or teamLab Borderless?

teamLab Borderless at Azabudai Hills opened on February 9, 2024. More than 70 works move from room to room and blend into “one world without boundaries,” and the fun is in wandering and discovering.

Planets in Toyosu centers on full-body experiences such as wading barefoot through water and walking among orchids, and you move through it in sequence.

Our take: if you don't mind getting wet and want to move around with children, choose Planets. If you want to drop in without worrying about clothes and explore at your own pace, choose Borderless.

Little-known spots

The moss garden at night
Push one of the egg-shaped “ovoids” in the outdoor Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms and it rights itself like a tumbler toy, rings, and changes color, and the change spreads to the ones around it. By day the garden fills with mist; after sunset the ovoids glow, in 61 colors.
Ramen inside an artwork
The outdoor area has Vegan Ramen UZU Tokyo, and you can eat your takeaway ramen inside artworks such as “Reversible Rotation in the Black Emptiness.” The restaurants are only reachable after entering the museum.
Take the orchids home
The Living Art Store sells orchids that bloomed in the Floating Flower Garden. Even after the petals fall, they will bloom again with care.
Your drawing as a souvenir
At the Sketch Factory, your own drawing is turned into badges, hand towels, T-shirts, tote bags and more to take home.
The koi are not a recording
In “Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People,” the koi react to people and to each other, and burst into flowers when they hit someone. A computer draws it in real time, so no moment repeats. Children with an inseam under 40 cm must be carried by an adult.
