Why does Pukarisanbashi Pier float on the water?
Pukarisanbashi, on the waterfront beside Pacifico Yokohama, is a small terminal with a green roof and a lighthouse-like clock tower. Opened in 1991, its official name is Minatomirai Pier Maritime Passenger Terminal. It was built to serve boats operating in Yokohama Harbor.
Its most unusual feature is that it was Japan's first floating pier of its kind. Rather than extending rigidly from the shore, it rests on the water, and visitors standing on it can feel a gentle motion reminiscent of being aboard a boat. The terminal's green roof and clock tower have also made it a favorite subject for sketches and oil paintings.
What began as a practical passenger terminal now contributes to the waterfront scenery of Minatomirai. During the illuminations, look for the green roof, clock tower and distinctive silhouette of the building floating on the harbor.
