Are there really goshawks living in the forest behind the station's name?
The name Nagareyama-otakanomori is more than an appealing image. It refers to the northern goshawks that inhabit Ichinoya Forest near the station. The name reflects the greenery of the surrounding area, and local residents' opinions were considered during the naming process.
On December 20, 2005, a real goshawk unexpectedly entered the station. After striking a transparent wall and injuring its wing, the bird became the focus of a rescue attempt involving city officials, wildlife protection personnel and police. Before they could capture it, however, it flew out of the station on its own. The incident was even reported by NHK.
In 2006, commemorative trees were planted in the south exit plaza, with species such as zelkova, kobushi magnolia and sawtooth oak chosen in consideration of the vegetation of Ichinoya Forest. The trees illuminated today are part of the city's effort to bring the character of a forest into its urban spaces. When admiring the roughly 200,000 lights, take a moment to notice the trees beneath them.
