Summarized from the official page and press materials.

Where do the kudzu and nuts come from? What is Shishigaya Citizens' Forest?

Yokohama's "Citizens' Forest" system, unique to the city, began in fiscal 1971 to protect green space. Landowners sign a contract of at least 10 years with the mayor not to develop the land, and in return residents can use the woods for walks and relaxation. As of March 31, 2026, 48 forests covering about 560 hectares had been designated.

Shishigaya Citizens' Forest opened on April 26, 1975. It covers 18.6 hectares and straddles Shishigaya in Tsurumi Ward and Morooka-cho in Kohoku Ward. Tsurumi Ward describes it as sitting at the end of a 40-50 m high plateau in the ward's northwest, with a streamside path, and as a favorite place for residents to unwind.

The instructors, Tonoyama no Mori wo Mamoritai, are a Yokohama forest volunteer group based mainly in this forest. They maintain the satoyama woodland, protect native Japanese dandelions and run environmental education for children, so the kudzu in your wreath comes from woods they care for. After the workshop, a walk in the forest where the materials grew could round off the day.
