What makes Oyama Senmaida special?

On the north side of the Mineoka mountains in Kamogawa, 375 paddies of all sizes step down a steep slope of about 32,000 square meters. Senmaida means "a thousand paddies," but there are about 375. They are listed among the Ministry of Agriculture's Top 100 Rice Terraces of Japan and are thought to date from before the Edo period.

Because land consolidation came late here, curving ridges that resist machinery still remain. The terraces are rain-fed, and many were built on old landslide ground using spring water and rainwater. Rice from the area is rated "Special A" quality.

Mt. Atago (408.0 m), visible above the terraces, is the highest point in Chiba Prefecture, yet the lowest of all of Japan's prefectural high points. The terraces also served as the setting for the rice-planting scenes in the film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. The lines of light at night follow the very curves that kept the machines out.
